For over fifty years, Stroud Squash Club has been at the heart of the local squash community. Founded in 1972 amidst a burgeoning interest in the sport, the club has grown from a grassroots initiative into a thriving hub for players of all levels.
Our story began in November 1972 when a passionate group of squash enthusiasts, including notable local sports figures such as JV Smith, England Rugby International, and Jack Gaskell, the club’s first chairman, gathered at Stroud Rugby Club. They envisioned a dedicated squash facility and, through their efforts, established Stroud Squash Club (Squash Section) and built two courts at Fromehall Park. Founding members also included Brian Pollard, a respected rugby and cricket player, and Mike Clapham, who served as chairman for many years before passing the baton to our current chairman, Ewen Denning.
Despite the closure of other local clubs over the years, Stroud Squash Club continues to thrive, offering recreational, social, and competitive squash for men, women, juniors, and children. Our teams have a proud history of success in the Gloucestershire leagues and have consistently contributed players to the Gloucestershire inter-county teams.
In 2021, we relocated to Wycliffe College, renowned for producing nationally and internationally successful players. Our new home features three glass-backed courts and a warm, welcoming environment for both new and returning members. Coaching is available for all skill levels, ensuring that everyone from beginners to advanced players can find their place at Stroud.
At Stroud Squash Club, our roots in community and camaraderie remain strong. The first item on our inaugural agenda in 1972 was organizing the bar rota—proof of our enduring spirit of friendship and sociability. We pride ourselves on being the best financial option for squash in the county, continuing to offer exceptional value and a vibrant, inclusive atmosphere.
Join us and be part of a club where history, community, and squash come together.
SSRC runs throughout the week with multiple sessions for all abilities. Courts sessions are 45 minutes.
